Top 10 Cities For Retirees
There are a few must haves on every retiree’s dream retirement home plan – low cost housing, good quality of living, low crime rate, health care services and access to plenty of recreational and cultural activities. On all these counts, Hot Springs, Arkansas, a spa resort town, comes out on top.
Not only is Hot Springs a popular resort town, it boasts of a low cost of housing which also makes it highly attractive for retirees living on a pension. Houses from 1,600 to 2,100 square feet cost anywhere from $135,000 to $225,000 here. The fact that the town is located in central Arkansas, makes it an attractive place for families from the Midwest.
According to geographer Warren Bland who drew up the list of the top places for retirees, the following factors were taken into account while determining an area’s eligibility for inclusion in the list - landscape, climate, quality of living, cost of living, transportation, retail services, healthcare, community services, cultural activities, recreational activities, work / volunteer activities and crime.
Although the general mindset is towards Florida and Arizona as obvious places to retire, this has seen a slow but steady change in recent years. This is, in a large part, due to the spread of information about other available places in the United States, via the internet. For example, the inclusion of Pittsburgh in the list. Earlier disparaged as a dirty, blue-collar town, today, the quality of life there has improved considerably. The city gets top marks for its air quality, numerous entertainment complexes, stores, restaurants and access to cultural and recreational opportunities.
