How Important Are Odors When Selling A Home
Home buyers who are looking to buy homes usually attach a lot of importance to smells in a house. This is true for all types of homes, be it a condominium, apartment or a stand alone home.
Many home buyers are turned off by the smell of cigarette smoke. They will not consider buying a house if it wreaks of cigarette smoke. On the other hand, smell of bread baking can cause a buyer to hang around since it evokes a homely sort of feeling.
Two odors that are considered to be real put off are cigarette smoke and pet odor. The people who smoke or have pets do realize the odor themselves and are happily oblivious to these deal killer smells. Most people when they smell cigarette smoke or pet odor are immediately turned off by the smell.
Similarly many people end up using strong room deodorizers to get rid of underlying odors and this has the same effect as cigarette smoke or pet odor. You will get a negative reaction from a potential buyer with unwashed sweaty clothes and cooking smells that have smell of cabbage, fish, garlic or curry.
So, if you considering of putting your home up for sale, the first thing to do is to stop smoking in the house. If you want to smoke, do it outside. Keep your dog in the garden or the basement, make sure you do your laundry and of course, stop cooking food with strong smells.
Odors that are potential buyers find attractive are baking smells from cookies, cinnamon buns and apple pies. In cool weather you can have apple cider with cinnamon simmering on the stove so that the aroma spreads around the house. The other alternative is to have fresh flowers with mild scent in a couple of vases around the house.
However, more important than introducing attractive odors in a home is to ensure that you get rid of offending odors. The offending odors do a lot of damage and are instrumental in spoiling a deal.
