Escalating home prices and rental rates have forced many renters to take extreme steps. Renters including women are making various offers and services including massaging, cooking, cleaning, laundry and even sexual favors for the purpose of getting a room for rent at an affordable and convenient rate. According to Dan Ross, who is the manager of Roommate Express, there has been a sharp increase in the number of prospective tenants bartering for decrease in the rent.
According to recent report published by M/PF YieldStar, the rental values in areas such as Florida, California and New Jersey have increased by a whopping 4 percent than the previous year. This figure was further increased by 0.6 percent in a report published by the Labor Department.
According to economists, the existing situation is due to troubled housing market. Many potential home buyers, who are unable to buy a home due to increasing prices, prefer to remain in their rental homes. This factor has encouraged several landlords to hike the rentals.
In order to save on the rent, several renters are even renting out couches, garages and even half of their bedroom. According to Dan, these measures are not legally acceptable and are sometimes prone to be highly risky. However, there are certain tips that can be followed to ensure a safe bartering for a rent.
Whenever any person is offering room for rent, it is always best to have a proper verification with respect to the identity of the person. A properly documented agreement must be written as it becomes useful if any claims are to be made in the local small claims court or at a labor commission. There are certain other measures which include keeping a track on the number of working hours being invested for the purpose, setting up personal boundaries with regard to behavioral aspects.
